Some youth football coaches fear that by pulling their linemen, they will leave big gaps in their offensive line that can easily be filled by defenders and cause negative yardage football plays.

Even if there is a defender right over your pulling linemen, a very simple blocking rule like GOD; inside gap, on, down will put another offensive lineman on the defender covering your pulling player. If a defense decides to cover everyone on your offensive line or go to a GAM type defense, then don’t pull. There would not be a defender to block if your puller made it to the point of attack anyway with those defenses.

If you have an extremely slow and unatheletic lineman that has problems covering gaps for pulling linemen, have them make a simple but effective crab block. Gaps left by pulling linemen are not a problem in youth football if your team uses the above techniques.

In reference to free-throw shooting in basketball the best coach is the ‘missed shot’.

One major part of the problem of shooting a crooked shot starts with the grip or the way the hand is aligned on the ball. The ‘follow-through’ is the computer processor which programs the shot for success.

There is no difference when shooting a basketball. Great shooting is not just thrusting the ball in the direction of the rim. Naturally I observed the shooting mechanics of the participants, as I always do. The average High School free-throw percentage is about 65% from the free-throw line. The free-throw is the pivotal shot in basketball. Every other shot has a connection to the free-throw and a similarity in release application. I also call this the correct ‘shot pocket’ when prepping to shoot.

The ideal ‘shot-pocket’ is to have the ball about 2 to 3 inches above the center of the forehead where your eyes can see the center of the rim, the inside of your shooting wrist, which is the peep-sight lined up with the rim center and the shooting arm when extended on the shot forms the rifle barrel. At the end of the shot, the index finger should align with the center of the rim, down the inside of the shooting arm and the right eye on a right handed shooter should all be in alignment.

Now you have a few pointers to concentrate on as you practice shooting. Of course there is a lot more involved as far as finger pressure and finger accountability on the ball and what finger has what role in the shot process.

Also understand that when I refer to free-throw shooting I mean the same process occurs with every shot especially 3 point shooting.

Basketball Free-Throw Shooting – An Analogy Between the Shooting Arm and a Rifle Barrel

The mental aspects of shooting are critically important. Study and apply the following aspects and you’ll be on your way:1) Don’t Think When Shooting the Basketball. You’ll hear this from us many times because it’s important…”Thinking about your shot is for practice, NOT for games!”So what!Don’t think, just shoot the damn ball!!!If you adopt this mentality, your shooting percentage will go UP.You might want to come up with your own method to stop thinking during games. Say it out loud or in your head several times.THEN, when you go to shoot (right as you’re catching the ball), say something to yourself like, “Nice shot. Anxiety causes tense muscles and a clouded mind. Here are a few tactics and basketball shooting tips to help you eliminate the fear of missing. So even if your shot doesn’t go in all the time, it’s OK. Just by teaching your mind to relax, you can dramatically improve your shooting percentage!!When your mind is truly relaxed and in the Alpha state, you have an AMAZING clarity and focus. Yes, even Kobe Bryant meditates before games. Meditation is simply a process of relaxed breathing and clearing you mind.

Shooting a high free throw percentage is necessary to be able to win close games. Here are a few tips on developing a great free throw shot.

Shooting free throws is more mental than anything else.

The Art of Shooting a Free Throw

A free throw is a shot in basketball that a player gets after they are fouled. Free throws are an important part of playing basketball. If you shoot right-handed, your right foot should be slightly forward. Holding the ball: Use both hands to hold the ball, but only your basketball shooting hand which will actually propel the ball forward. Don’t shoot two-handed. Your shooting hand is the platform and should be underneath the ball with your wrist cocked back. Your other hand helps support or balance the ball, but does not enter into the actual shooting of the ball. Your non-basketball shooting hand should actually come off the ball just before you release the ball, so that you are shooting with one hand. Set Point: The set point is where you position the ball just prior to releasing the shot. If you are right-handed and shoot with your shoulders and feet square to the hoop, have the ball to the right of your face, a little toward the right shoulder. Releasing the ball: Take the deep breath, and shoot. Your basketball shooting arm extends forward toward the hoop, the elbow extends and then you release the ball with a snap of the wrist, with the ball rolling off your fingertips. Repetition is the key to success in basketball shooting free throws.

Shooting Drill 1.

One-hand shooting, using either the strong hand or the weak hand, is an excellent way to develop your ability to start and complete a shot with your shooting hand facing the front of the rim. This drill is particularly beneficial if your non-shooting hand tends to interfere with your shot (for example, if you thumb the ball with your non-shooting hand). The one-hand shooting drill allows you to focus on having the shooting hand in the correct position facing the front of the rim. Keep your shooting elbow in. When your shooting elbow is in, the ball is aligned with the basket. Your shooting hand is above your shoulder between your ear and shoulder. Use your non-shooting hand to place the ball in your shooting hand. Do not reach for the ball with your shooting hand. Now lower your non-shooting hand to your side. Balance the ball in your shooting hand with your index finger at the midpoint of the ball. Record the number of strong-hand shots made out of 10 attempts. After making five consecutive shots from 9 feet, increase the distance to 12 feet.

Shooting Drill 2.

Shooting Drill 3. Use the pinky and ring finger of your non-shooting hand to balance the ball and the index finger of your shooting hand to shoot the ball. Balance the ball with your non-shooting hand under the ball. Keep the elbow of your non-shooting hand out. Bring the ball to your shooting hand. Now balance the ball using only the pinky and ring finger of your non-shooting hand. The other fingers of your non-shooting hand should be off the ball.

Shooting Drill 4. Jump Shot Warm-Up

Perform jump shots from that distance, using correct form for each shot. For a jump shot, the ball is held higher than for a one-hand set shot.

Shooting Drill 5. Front of Board

The front of board shooting drill focuses on the fundamentals: shooting hand behind the ball, elbow-in alignment, release off the index finger, follow-through, and catching the ball in position to shoot. Begin with the ball in shooting position above your shooting shoulder. Place your shooting hand behind the ball with your index finger at the midpoint of the ball. If the ball does not return to your starting position, jump behind the ball and catch it in position to shoot. After a missed shot, visualize a successful shot in good form, again saying your key words. Use hands if you caught the ball with your hands on the side.

Shooting Drill 6. Side of Board

This enables you to practice jumping behind the ball to catch it in position to shoot. Catch the ball in position to shoot.

Shooting Drill 7. This drill is obviously more difficult than the side-of-board shooting drill. This enables you to practice jumping behind the ball to catch it in position to shoot. Focus on your target on the point of the board and shoot the ball, emphasizing the release of the ball off your index finger. Catch the ball in position to shoot.

Shooting Drill 8. Use your non-shooting hand to place the ball in your shooting hand. Do not reach for the ball with your shooting hand. The index finger of your shooting hand should be at the midpoint of the ball. Visualize a successful shot with good form. If the shot was short, emphasize the key word through!.

Shooting Drill 9. Toss to Left Elbow Jump Shot

Catch the ball with your shooting hand high and facing the front of the rim. Catch and shoot in one motion. Shoot 10 shots from the left elbow.

Shooting Drill 10. Toss to Right Elbow Jump Shot

Shoot 10 shots from the right elbow. (2005). Basketball Shooting: Confidence, Rhythm and Mechanics.
